Holy God, well-spring of life, in your love and justice, you use the gift of water to declare your saving power. In the beginning your Spirit moved over the face of the waters. By the gentle dew, the steady rain, you nourish and give increase to all that grows; you make the desert a watered garden. You command the wildness of the waves; when the storm rages you calm our fear ...

We operate an 'open' baptism policy at Saint Mary and Saint James. If you are thinking of asking about baptism for yourself or your child please do not hesitate to get in touch. The following information might be helpful to you. CAN I OR MY CHILD BE BAPTISED AT ST MARY'S OR ST JAMES'? Baptism is offered to anyone who intends to follow the Christian life, wishes to belong to a Christian Community, and is willing to make certain promises. Baptism is offered to children who are too young to make the promises themselves but in this case, parents and godparents are required to make the promises on behalf of their child / godchild. You can see what the promises are by downloading the baptism service (see below) WHEN DO THE SERVICES TAKE PLACE? Baptisms take place during one of the Sunday morning services, or in certain circumstances at another time on a Sunday afternoon. WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SERIVCE? During the service, promises are made, prayers are said and the person being baptised has water poured over his or her head as a sign of new birth. In addition, the sign of the cross is traced, in oil, on the candidates head to signify belonging to Christ, and a lighted candle is given, to show that the light of Christ has come into his or her life. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? There is no charge - the grace of God free. All that is required is your response! WHAT ABOUT GODPARENTS? Godparents must be baptised. Other than that there are no hard and fast rules although a godparent must be prepared to make promises on behalf of his or her godchild. CAN I TAKE PICTURES DURING THE SERVICE? Not usually during the service itself although the opportunity will be given afterwards.
